Sciatic

Surely you have heard of sciatica or maybe you already know what it feels like ...

Sciatica is a term that is used for a set of equal symptoms inherent to distinct pathologies.

We talk about sciatic pain to describe the pain symptoms, tingling, weakness or numbness that are originated in the lumbar region, that descend through the gluteal region to the leg posterior portion, accompanying the path of the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica is the result of nerve compression or irritation, that may be caused by a herniated disc (most common cause), a muscle contraction around the nerve, a spinal cord compression, a vertebral misalignment, or an osteophyte.

Usually the symptoms improve during walking or lying down, but when the pain is too intense, it can make standing or walking difficult. Coughing or sneezing may accentuate the symptoms.

Although degenerative processes leading to a herniated disc can not be avoided, there are some measures that help protect the spine and reduce the risk of herniated disc and sciatica.

It is of extreme importance to be attentive to our daily movements and postures, if they are as correct as possible the predisposition for injuries is much smaller, physical therapy and adequate physical exercise achieve good results in many cases.

About 80% to 90% of cases of sciatica are resolved without surgery, but to achieve that you need to be aware of your body and as soon as the first symptoms begin seek medical advice.

We can help you!
