Cancer and Exercise

A study by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) makes it quite clear that the best advice for cancer prevention following the recommendations of a balanced diet, exercise and control of body weight. Since the control of these factors is associated with a lower risk of most types of cancer.

It is important that people take note of the following numbers:

- 1/3 of cancer deaths are attributed to wrong diet and physical inactivity.

- 75 to 80% of most cancers are associated with sedentary lifestyles.

- 40% of cancers can be prevented with lifestyle changes.

- 30% of cancers are directly or indirectly related to nutrition.

The Portuguese League Against Cancer states that there is currently no doubt that excess body fat, consume a lot of calories and lack of exercise are associated with an increased risk of developing many types of cancer, including oesophageal cancer, colorectal, breast, uterus and kidney.

Exercise can not only have an important role in the prevention of cancer as well as help those who are receiving treatment and survivors, to improve the quality of life and functional capacity, because of the physical and mental strain suffered during the treatment sessions.

To start the exercise should speak with a qualified personal trainer together to the doctor for a quality and safety monitoring in the years to accomplish.
