BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES IN ASPERGER SYNDROME

Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is a disorder of the autism spectrum, which is characterized by a change in brain development that will affect individuals in terms of social interactions, communication and behavior. The cause of the disease is still unknown, but it is believed that it may be due to genetic factors. This is more common in men than in women. In Portugal it is estimated that there are 40,000 cases of people with this disease.

Individuals with this disease usually have average or above average intelligence (IQ), show difficulty in empathizing with others, starting a conversation, understanding simple indications, exhibiting routine behaviors and having particular interests. They need to have a consistent and unchanging daily routine. Any small unforeseen event can cause great anxiety. They isolate themselves socially, becoming sedentary citizens, consequently they have difficulty in motor coordination.

Physical activity and sport can play a fundamental role in improving these behaviors. Thus, if a child with AS starts early to practice a team sport, he will have to socialize with colleagues and learn to work in a team.

Children with AS when submitted to a training program show an improvement in antisocial behavior (Pan, 2010).

A teacher / trainer should adopt, with these children objective instructions, never using expressions in a figurative sense. The activities carried out should focus on the work of self-confidence and self-esteem and focus on collective tasks, in order to emphasize socialization with colleagues. They should work with students on psychomotricity and, as the training is carried out, gradually put different obstacles, in order to help the child to overcome the difficulties he has in the face of changes in plans.

If you have a family member or friend who suffers from this pathology and you want to help him, do not let him isolate himself at home, contact us. We will be happy to arrange the ideal program, so that it feels integrated and motivated to perform physical activity.
