What is visceral fat?

We call visceral fat the fat that accumulates in the abdominal area (Kelly), among the various organs that are located there, such as the stomach, liver and pancreas.

There are two types of fat present in our body, the subcutaneous fat which is the fat that is present between the skin and the muscle and the visceral fat is a fat that is present between the viscera of our organs, this is the most harmful fat for our health.

Why do we get visceral fat? There are several factors, among them, excessive consumption of carbohydrates (mainly sweets), consumption of alcoholic beverages, physical inactivity and a totally unbalanced diet.

 

What are the risks associated with visceral fat?

- Myocardial infarction;

- Heart disease;

- Increased insulin resistance - (causes an increase in blood sugar levels), pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes;

- High blood pressure;

- Stroke;

- Higher levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and total and lower levels of good cholesterol (HDL).
