Stress and anxiety, role of physical exercise

Physical exercise is a natural and effective anti-anxiety treatment. Relieves tension, increases physical and mental energy and improves well-being through the release of endorphins. Most physical activities will help, but you'll do even better with activities that require you to concentrate rather than be distracted.

By adding this element of mindfulness – keeping your focus on yourself and your body as you perform the exercise – you will not only improve your physical condition further, but you can also interrupt the constant flow of worries that may be present.

Have you ever noticed how your body feels when you are under high levels of stress? Muscles can become tense, especially in the face, neck and shoulders, causing back or neck pain, or even headaches. You may also experience tightness in your chest, a faster pulse, or muscle cramps. Problems such as insomnia, heartburn, stomach pain, diarrhea, among others, may also be associated. The worry and discomfort of all these physical symptoms can lead to even more stress, creating a vicious cycle between the mind and body.

Regular exercise of appropriate intensity is a very effective way to break this cycle. In addition to releasing endorphins, physical activity helps to relax muscles and relieve muscle tension. The body and mind are so closely linked, when your physical shape is better, your mind will improve too.
