Is Pilates just stretching?

Pilates is a physical conditioning method that strengthens and stretches muscles. In this way, its exercises work to improve posture by stabilizing deep muscles and also improve breathing, which improves concentration and activates the parasympathetic system – the one that calms and reduces stress.  Furthermore, the exercises improve balance and body organization. The level of progression (from beginner to advanced) depends on the practitioner's practice time and concentration.

Pilates increases muscle mass, therefore the basal metabolism also increases, however the calories lost during a session are low when compared to aerobic training and as a result Pilates does not help you lose weight.

“Pilates is much more than segmented exercises, it is the control of the mind, body and spirit.” Joseph Hubertus Pilates
