Let's find out which exercises help you burn extra calories.

EPOC: Excessive post-exercise oxygen consumption

EPOC refers to a state in which, after strenuous exercise, your body uses more oxygen than normal to speed recovery. At the cellular level, this oxygen eliminates lactate, normalizes hormone levels, and reduces body temperature, heart rate, and breathing.

However if you hear training colleagues talking about EPOC, they are probably referring to the most popular of its effects, increased calorie burn in the hours after training.

Any type of exercise that raises your heart rate leads to some level of EPOC, but the longer or more demanding your session, the stronger the effects.

While not extremely significant on its own, EPOC can contribute to fat loss if it's consistent with the training process.

Since the EPOC reflects your body's attempt to recover, schedule at least one day of simpler or shorter exercise in between these high-intensity sessions.
