Cycling on an empty stomach, yes or no?
Indoor Cycle is a pure cardio class, highly dynamic and interactive. It burns between 300 and 900 calories, depending on each person and the work to be done in the class.
But the question is: Is Indoor Cycle on an empty stomach beneficial or not?
No, fasting should be avoided when we talk about Indoor Cycle or modalities that focus on cardio work and the main reason to avoid this is the time it takes for the body to reach its point of fatigue. Exercising on an empty stomach, especially if it is done in the morning, causes the body to activate the mode of greatest energy expenditure to try to maintain its functions and combat fatigue. And according to nutritionists such as Dr. Maria João Gregório, professor at the Faculty of Nutrition and Food Sciences of the University of Porto (FCNUAP), who was awarded the “Nutritionist of the Year 2024” by Viver Saudável magazine for her contribution to the development and affirmation of Nutrition Sciences and Portuguese Nutritionists, she states that using these energy reserves is not beneficial for those who want to work on losing fat.
When practicing physical exercise, especially when we are talking about training aimed at cardio work, it is advisable for the student to eat before starting their workout. And in this case, the quantity and quality of the food that is eaten must be taken into account, but also how far in advance this meal should be eaten. Therefore, the student should choose light and easy-to-swallow foods, and it is advisable to eat something one hour to 15 minutes before training.
For students who start cardio training in the middle of the day, they can take other precautions with their diet, especially with regard to carbohydrate intake, so that there is a source of energy to be used during the workout.
